February

Presentation by Dr. Angelo Vu, "Senior Skin Care:  It's Never Too Late"

Date:  Tuesday, February 12
Time:  2:00 -- 3:00 pm
Cost:   Free
Location:  Ground Floor Conference Room

Research shows that there are two major factors that impact aging:  those caused by the genes we inherit and those changes caused by environmental factors such as exposure to the sun's rays, illness or lack of personal hygiene.  While little can be done to "fight" the natural aging process, there are numerous measures that can be taken to limit external factors that lead to the most prevalent skin conditions among the elderly.

The American Geriatrics Society advises older persons about ways to limit external factors that can lead to skin cancer, infection or debilitating skin irritation.  It might be surprising but just minutes of sun exposure each day over the years can cause noticeable changes to the skin.  But although skin cancer is fairly common, it isn't the only skin condition that seriously impacts seniors.  Dr. Vu will also discuss other common skin conditions including shingles, eczema and skin ulcers.

What is shingles and what can be done to help with the pain?  Is there anything one can do to prevent eczema?  What does skin cancer look like?  These are a few of the questions Dr. Angelo Vu will attempt to answer.  RSVP is requested but not required.

Dr. Vu is a board-certified Internal Medicine physician new to the Huguley campus.  He specializes in adult medicine, including diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and arthritis.  In addition, his practice is open for same-day sick visits and general healthcare check-ups.  Dr. Vu is located in the Doctor's Surgery Center at Huguley.  He is now accepting new patients and most insurance plans, including Medicare.

Bus Trip to Beaumont -- One Boomin' Place

Date:  Wednesday & Thursday, February 20 & 21
Time:  8:30 am on Wednesday -- 8:00 pm on Thursday
Cost:  $155 for HuguleyPlus members; $165 for non-members

This two-day trip will be fun, interesting and educational.  Beaumont is dubbed "The Museum Capital of Texas," and we'll find out why.  Included in our stops will be the McFaddin-Ward House & Museum, a gorgeous home that still has all its original furnishings and was built for the McFaddin family in an era of prosperity and unlimited fortune.  The Texas Fire Museum displays historic famous trucks, firefighter memorabilia and a 24-foot tall hydrant that was donated by Disney after it was used to promote its movie 101 Dalmations.

Beaumont got its start with the discovery of oil at the famous Spindletop Hill.  Refineries remain a tremendous part of the region's economy.  The fabulous exhibits at the Texas Energy Museum share the story of energy beginning with the dinosaurs and ending with the refining process.  The Spindletop -- Gladys City Boomtown Museum will be a special stop with a reenactment of the blowing of the Lucas Gusher in 1901 when the boomtown sprang up overnight.  Replicas of the general store, salon, soda shop, barbershop and more will take us back in time.  And the Spindletop staff will prepare and serve us a delicious dinner.

Among other stops will be the Jefferson Theatre, built in 1927 for vaudeville shows and motion picture presentations.  The theatre is one of the few remaining art deco movie houses in the country.  Our overnight accommodations will be at the Fairfield Inn.  Cost includes transportation, overnight stay at Fairfield Inn, dinner on day 1, breakfast and lunch on day 2, and all tours.
